Conrad Black keeps appointment with judge

CHICAGO, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Conrad Black, a Canadian press baron turned British lord turned U.S. defendant, was arraigned Thursday in Chicago.

Black, who was expected to plead innocent, and several associates were federally charged two weeks ago of scamming some $84 million from Hollinger International, a once-prominent newspaper holding company, CBC said.

One of Black's associates, John Boultbee, failed to appear in court Wednesday and may face extradition proceedings.

Fellow Canadian Peter Atkinson also failed to appear but was expected in court Thursday.

Black, Boultbee, Atkinson and former Hollinger lawyer Mark Kipnis are accused of looting Hollinger International and defrauding shareholders.

If convicted on all eight fraud charges, Black faces as much as 40 years behind bars.
