BRUSSELS, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The European Union and Asia agreed to fight spam and promote international anti-spam efforts during a conference in London.
During an Asia-Europe conference on e-commerce, all 25-member states of the European Union and 13 Asian countries agreed to combat spam by setting up anti-spam strategies and encouraging international cooperation to curb the cross-border threat.
"I welcome this important EU-Asia statement on spam," Viviane Reding, Information Society and Media commissioner, said.
"The EU cannot act alone in the fight against spam as it is essentially borderless. It is crucial that the problem be taken seriously in every part of the world and in particular to regions where a lot of spam is reported to originate."
More than 60 percent of all global e-mail traffic is spam according to various industry sources, the commission said. Experts estimate that more than 20 percent of spam comes from China and South Korea.
