New Guicci boss unveiling sales plan

LONDON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Robert Polet, who used to sell Popsicles and frozen peas, is ready to unveil his sales strategy to thaw out the Gucci Group.

Polet, the new chief executive at Gucci, is about to find out if he can interest the public in $1,000 handbags, the New York Times said. Polet explains his plan for turning around an often money-losing business next Tuesday for the first time since joining the company in June.

Polet, 49, says he wants to double the sales of Gucci's brand-name merchandise in the next seven years. The fashion industry, historically suspicious of outsiders, will be watching intently,

There has been speculation Gucci would try to make its goods more affordable.

Polet is expected to announce that instead of selling any of Gucci's money-losing brands, at least for now, he will focus on trying to turn them around. These include Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.
