US: $200 million more for armored Humvees

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. government has ordered another $100 million worth of heavily armored Humvees fom Armor Holdings, Inc. in Fairfield, Ohio.

Armor Holdings' O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt Armoring Co. is the only company in the United States producing the up-armored Humvee, the demand for which has soared as Iraqi insurgents increasingly rely on massive roadside bombs to target U.S. forces.

Armor now has orders totaling $235 million for the vehicles. The latest orders, for 2005 and 2006, are from the U.S. Army, Air Force and "a U.S. federal agency," a frequently used euphemism for the CIA.

The large contract means Armor Holdings' will charge an average of 15 percent less per vehicle to its government customers than the current price, the company said in a statement Friday. The award was made late Thursday.

The Pentagon also gave $115 million contract to AM General Corp., of South Bend, Ind., for 1,408 M1114 armored chassis for the standard Humvee.
