Reliant Energy gets $35.9 million contract

HOUSTON, May 25 (UPI) -- Reliant Energy of Texas said Tuesday it won a contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to supply energy to several military installations.

Reliant Energy said the Department of Defense contracts are for installations based in Houston, as well as Andrews Air Force Base, home to Air Force One, and the Walter Reed Medical Center in the Washington area.

Others participating in the contract include the Carderock Naval Weapons Testing Center, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Adelphi Labs, and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The 17-month contract calls for Reliant to supply 93 megawatts of electricity beginning July 4. Valued at $35.9 million, the contract will save taxpayers $11.7 million when compared with the regulated standard offer service.

Reliant Energy also said it was awarded a contract by the Baltimore Metropolitan Council to supply 134 megawatts of electricity to 23 Maryland government entities, including the city of Baltimore.
