Russia to crack down on its oil industry

MOSCOW, March 23 (UPI) -- Russia's finance minister vowed to revamp the country's oil industry by raising export duties and closing tax loopholes, the Financial Times reports.

The changes are designed to cut the excessive profits reaped by Russian oil oligarchs as well as reduce economic dependence on oil exports. The export tax will increase proportionately as the price of oil rises.

Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said the move will help curb tax evasion that costs Russia billions of dollars in unpaid taxes.

Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref said closing loopholes would also make it easier for Russian oil companies to compete on a more level playing field.
