Ford Motor teams up with Phil Mickelson

MIAMI, March 3 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co., looking to cash in on golfing's growing popularity, has signed up golf star Phil Mickelson for an advertising campaign.

The nation's No. 2 automaker was to show off the first promotion Wednesday on the eve of the company's signature event, the Ford Championship at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, the Detroit News reported.

The theme is "Phil's on the Phone" and a lucky fan will complete a foursome with Mickelson, hockey great Wayne Gretzky and auto racer Dale Jarrett.

Mickelson and the fan will partner against Gretzky and Jarrett in an alternate-shot match on Doral's famous Blue Monster course.

Carmakers are looking to capitalize on golf's growing popularity. The world's No. 1 player, Tiger Woods, endorses the Buick brand, made by General Motors, the world's No. 1 automaker.
