WTC rebuilding costs soar

NEW YORK, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The tab for rebuilding the World Trade Center office and retail space in New York has reached almost $7.5 billion, with no funding in sight.

The New York Post said that figure is part of an expected overall Ground Zero reconstruction price tag of more than $11 billion amid questions about where the money is coming from,

The detailed cost estimate was prepared for WTC developer Larry Silverstein, who goes to trial next month in his legal fight with WTC insurers.

He has said he expects a payout of close to $7 billion. Silverstein has repeatedly said the project hinges on his ability to convince a federal jury that Sept. 11 constituted two separate attacks, one on each tower.

Preliminary rulings in the case have gone against him.

"Does anybody have any idea where the money's coming from, except Larry's litigation?" one source asked.
