American Airlines hikes fuel surcharge

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- American Airlines Thursday announced an increase in its domestic fuel surcharge because of rising jet fuel costs.

The Fort Worth-based airline said the surcharge was increased by $3 on one-way trips and $6 on round-trips effective immediately. It applies only to travel in the United States and between the United States and Canada.

With the increase, the fuel surcharge now totals $13 one-way, $26 round trip, on applicable airfares.

Last month, American applied a similar surcharge to cover escalating jet fuel costs, but rescinded it later based on market conditions at the time. Since then, however, fuel prices have continued to escalate, the airline said.

American said the average spot price for a gallon of jet fuel has climbed from 83 cents two months ago to 99 cents, a 19 percent increase. Each 1-cent increase in the price of jet fuel translates into an additional $30 million per year for American, the airline said.
