Subpoenas are issued in AOL investigation

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Federal officials issued subpoenas Wednesday to top managers of America Online and Time Warner as part of an investigation into AOL's accounting practices.

The New York Times said it learned subpoenas were issued to Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons, AOL founder Steve Case and other senior officials.

The newspaper said SEC investigators are questioning AOL's booking of $400 million in revenue from transactions with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG following the 2001 merger of America Online and Time Warner.

The Washington Post said the SEC is accusing AOL of overstating advertising revenue, rather than booking a portion of the $400 million as a rebate related to other transactions.

In a quarterly financial filing Wednesday, AOL revealed it lost 2 million subscribers during the past year, including 688,000 users who left the online service during the third quarter.
