Notebooks fuel PC growth

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Worldwide PC shipments rose 14 to 16 percent in the third quarter, driven by strong consumer and notebook demand, analysts say.

The Financial Times reported British concern Gartner said shipments grew 14.1 percent, compared with the same period last year while U.S. analyst IDC said growth was 15.7 percent. Shipments were well above forecasts of just over 10 percent.

The researchers agreed growth was being driven by consumer demand for notebooks.

"We continue to see phenomenal growth in portables. Consumers in particular have reacted to low prices and wireless features," said Loren Loverde, director of IDC's worldwide quarterly PC tracker.

European laptop growth rose above 50 percent in the quarter, IDC added.
