Suzuki introduces scooters in the US

BREA, Calif., June 9 (UPI) -- The American Suzuki Motor Corp. announced Monday it is introducing Suzuki Burgman scooters in the United States.

The automaker said the 2003 models of the 400 and 650 series scooters, already popular in Europe and Japan, have been modified for the U.S. market. The Burgman 400 is offered at an MSRP of $5,599, while the Burgman 650 -- the most powerful scooter in the U.S. – is priced at $7,699.

ASMC said the scooters, with high-performance engines, expanded storage, comfortable riding positions and other rider features, are being marketed as efficient alternative urban commuting vehicles.

Mel Harris, vice president of the firm's motorcycle/ATV division, said an aggressive fairing and body styling projects a more muscular, motorcycle-like image than the American public has of scooters.

The company notes its scooters can be filled with gasoline for less than $10.
