NASCAR race postponed until Monday

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. -- An all-day rain Sunday forced the postponement the Tyson Holly Farms 400 race until Monday morning, marking the second straight week a NASCAR Winston Cup race was pushed back a day because of rain.

NASCAR officials waited for almost two hours after the scheduled starting time to make the decision to run the $631,955 event at the North Wilkesboro Speedway 11 a.m. Monday.

A steady, driving rain pelted the .625-mile oval as teams took their cars to pit lane for the scheduled start time. But the 32-car field remained under covers and tarps all day.

Last week's Goody's 500 in Martinsville, Va., was postponed to Monday by a series of rain showers. More rain Monday further delayed the start of the event for nearly five hours.

Alan Kulwicki, who won the pole at an event-record pace of 117.133 mph, and Rusty Wallace will lead the 32 cars to the green flag Monday morning. Geoff Bodine, the winner of last week's race, Kyle Petty and Ricky Rudd round out the top five qualifiers. Defending race winner, Dale Earnhardt, will start from the seventh row. Season points leader Bill Elliott will be in the eighth row.

The last Winston Cup event rained out at the track in North Carolina's Brushy Mountains was in 1989.
