FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Funeral services were slated Friday for Fred Newman, who pitched for the California Angels for six years in the 1960s.

He was 45.

Newman died Wednesday in the Framingham Union Hospital following an auto accident in Holliston, where he had lived for 12 years.

Newman signed in 1962 with the Los Angeles Angels, now the California Angels, and played with them until his retirement in 1967. The right-hander's best year was 1964 when he was 13-10 with a 2.75 ERA; his career record was 33-39 and 3.41 ERA.

Newman was a firefighter in Brookline, Mass., near Boston, from 1970 to 1978.
