Haiti president's kin charged with drug handling

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The brother-in-law of Haitian President Jean-Claude Duvalier was charged with possession and attempted possession of heroin and cocaine, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said.

Frantz Bennett, 28, whose sister Michelle married the 29-year-old Haitian 'president for life' in May 1980, was held in a San Juan jail Friday night pending payment of a $2 million cash bond.

Ron Seibert, head of the DEA, said Bennett had been investigated for drug dealing for nearly two months.

An agent arrested Bennett, who gave his occupation as a charter pilot, at San Juan's Dupont Plaza Hotel, Seibert said.

Bennett was charged with possessing with intent to sell of 26 grams of cocaine and with attempting to take possession with intent to sell of another 500 grams of cocaine and six grams of heroin.

Seibert gave few details of the arrest and said 'no comment' when asked whether the U.S. State Department might become involved in the case.

He also would not comment on whether Haiti's consul in Puerto Rico, Carlo Noel, had been notified of Bennett's arrest.

Seibert said Bennett will be taken before a grand jury Wednesday and more details of the case would be released then.
