BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A 27-year-old man who held his girfriend hostage at knifepoint critically wounded a woman and stabbed three police officers Friday before he was finally subdued, authorities said.

Police said Daniel Colon, 27, stabbed Margaret Kodovocz, 58, in her home about 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Mrs. Kodovocz, who was reported in critical condition at Columbus Hospital with a stomach wound, apparently was stabbed when she interfered in an argument between Colon and his girlfriend, Alice Martinez, 19, police said.

Police said officers responding to reports of a stabbing encountered Colon outside Mrs. Kodovocz's home holding Miss Martinez at knifepoint.

Detective Salvatore Coniglio jumped Colon from behind, police said, and was stabbed twice in the back before other officers subdued the suspect. Coniglio was listed in serious but stable condition Friday at Deaconess Hospital.

Two other officers were slashed on the hand during the struggle, but their injuries were not believed to be serious.

'When he grabbed the man, they both went down on the ground,' Officer Richard Nigro said of Coniglio's decision to jump Colon. 'The next thing we knew he had the knife out of his pocket and plunged it into Sal's back.

'We all jumped on him,' Nigro said. 'but there was no way he was going to let go of the knife.

'He was waving and slashing it everywhere. Finally I got hold of his hand and literally had to pry each of his fingers off the knife.'

Police said Coniglio's action allowed Miss Martinez to break away from Colon and escape injury.

Colon, who was taken to Columbus Hospital for treatment of bruises suffered in the struggle, was charged with attempted murder and five counts of assault.
