Massive earthquake strikes Indonesia

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- An earthquake measuring as high as 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the tip of northern Sumatra in Indonesia Saturday, injuring more than 30 people, geophysicists said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Geoscience Australia said the quake measured 7.7 and was centered in the sea off the coast. The U.S. Geological Survey issued its reading at 7.5.

Geological Survey estimated the earthquake's depth at 20 miles and said it was centered about 950 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

But Indonesian authorities said the quake was centered near the town of Singkil, in southern Aceh province, and measured at least 5.3 on the Richter scale.
