Red Sox owner John Henry calls David Ortiz contract extension 'conceivable'

BOSTON, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- After Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz made headlines for saying “This is our [expletive] city” following the Boston Marathon bombings in April, it appears that his colorful use of language on Tuesday may have made some people sit up and take notice once again -- specifically Red Sox owner John Henry.

The day after Ortiz went on a profanity-related rant about getting a contract extension from the team, Henry said that extending Ortiz’s deal is "conceivable."

The 38-year-old is entering the final year of his contract and is reportedly looking for a one-year extension.

“I just want people to stop talking to me about that,” Ortiz told the Boston Herald on Tuesday. “When you put up numbers like I'm putting up, who's thinking about retiring, know what I'm saying? People keep on asking me, how long do you want to play? When are you going to retire? Dude, look at my numbers. I ain't planning on retiring right now. When I slow down, then I'll retire.”

Ortiz took home World Series MVP honors last year after hitting .688 to help lead the Red Sox to a win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

“I don't even know why they're bitching about me talking about contracts,” Ortiz said. “Guys putting up my numbers, they're making $25, $30 million. I'm not asking for that. I'm asking for half of it. And they're still bitching about it? [Expletive] them. I'm tired of hearing them talk [expletive] about me when I talk about my contract. Hey, every time I talk about my contract, I earn it, [expletive]. So don't be giving me that [expletive].”

Ortiz, who is entering his 11th season in Boston, arrived at spring training with his agent in tow.
