SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Dutch speed skater Ireen Wust was the first openly gay athlete to win a medal at the Sochi Olympic Games, taking gold in the 3,000-meters race Sunday.

This wasn't the first time Wust won gold at the Olympics, but it was the first time in Russia, which recently adopted an anti-gay propaganda law, threatening legal action against anyone who promoted homosexuality to minors.

Wust is one of seven openly gay athletes competing in Sochi, but she's not particularly interested in discussing it.

“I want to talk about ice skating”, Wust said during an interview in 2010. “You are not asking (fellow Dutch speedskater) Sven Kramer about how his relationship is going. So why would you ask me? If I would’ve had a relationship with a guy, you wouldn’t have asked me either.”

Wust is scheduled to compete again in 1,500- and 1,000-meter speedskating races.
