WEST BRANCH, Iowa, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- The aunt of a 6-day-old abducted infant allegedly said she hid the baby bundled in blankets inside a plastic tote near an Iowa gas station before she was arrested on a charge unrelated to the kidnapping.

The baby, Kayden Powell, was found alive and healthy in the tote alongside a BP gas station in West Branch, Iowa, the Iowa City Press Citizen reported Friday.

The baby's aunt, Kristen, R. Smith, of Colorado, allegedly told police she put the baby in the plastic tote early Thursday morning, meaning he spent more than 28 hours there while temperatures dropped to as low as minus 11.

Kayden was found to be in good condition at a hospital and was discharged.

Smith, 31, was charged with kidnapping.

She was at the Wisconsin home of Kayden's family Wednesday evening and left early Thursday, when the baby was reported missing. Police contacted Smith on her cellphone and she agreed to pull off to the side of the interstate and meet with West Branch police.

Police arrested her on an outstanding warrant in Texas.
