Deal will ensure that Ryan enters 2014 without "lame duck" status.

Somebody is getting a foot rub tonight...

According to multiple reports, the New York Jets and head coach Rex Ryan have agreed to a contract extension that should keep him with the team through at least 2015 with the possibility for additional years if things go well.

The contract is guaranteed through 2015 but any additional years are non-guaranteed.

Although the deal might not give Ryan much long-term security, it does ensure that he won’t enter 2014 as a “lame duck” head coach. Although Gang Green only went 8-8 in 2013, Ryan probably earned the extension based on what he was able to do with the players that management gave him to work with.

Despite the Jets missing the playoffs for a third consecutive season, things could turn around next year if quarterback Geno Smith is able to improve on the numbers he put up in his rookie season.

The 51-year-old coach is entering his sixth season as the Jets head coach and has an overall record of 46-40, including the playoffs. The team may have struggled recently, but Ryan did help take New York to consecutive AFC Championship games during his first two years at the helm.
