Amtrak crash injures driver when train hits car

Police said Untron Drew was under the influence of alcohol when he ignored warning lights and a crossing bar and drove onto tracks before being struck by an oncoming Amtrak train.

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A man was injured Thursday morning when his car was struck by an Amtrak train traveling nearly 80 miles an hour near Waverly, Va.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, which happened after the driver, Untron Drew, drove around the crossing bar and ignored the warning lights, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Drew was hurt and flown to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Amtrak train had just begun its route from Norfolk, Va., to Boston, Mass., and was able to continue its journey north with a two-hour delay. None of the 44 passengers or five crew were injured.
