Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The bodies of two people were recovered after a medical jet crashed off the east coast of Florida Tuesday night.

The Learjet crashed shortly after takeoff from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where it had dropped off a patient and was returning to Cozumel, Mexico. Four people were on board: two pilots, a doctor and a nurse, according to airport spokesman Greg Meyer.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Mark Burney said the bodies of a man and a woman were fished out of the water, and authorities are continuing the search for two others who were on board.

While the cause of the crash is not yet clear, the pilot can be heard asking to turn the plane around, then say "Mayday, mayday, mayday," on an audio recording of the moments before the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
