(UPI) -- Jada Pinkett Smith sported a drastic new hairdo at the Make Equality Reality event Monday. Smith's new look earned mix reviews when she debuted it in October, but that didn't stop the 42-year-old mother from owning it at the event's red carpet.

Many have said the do is reminiscent of her 13-year-old daughter Willow's hair from 2012. At the time, Smith penned an open letter defending her daughter's decision to go for the controversial cut.
"Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair," Smith wrote in November 2012. "Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes a little girl should be."
The actress's new look comes amidst rumors that her relationship with fellow actor Will Smith is in trouble. While the couple, married for 16 years, have endured criticism for years, new photos that show Will getting really close to his Focus costar Margot Robbie re-sparked the gossip.
A source close to the couple dismissed the hearsay, telling Us Weekly that Will was not "hooking up" with his co-star.
"That was a photo booth on set that the producers got for everyone," another insider told Us Weekly. "It was the last day of filming and everyone was taking pictures. They were just goofing around. Will is just like that. There's nothing more to it."
