Mike Miller considers lawsuit against the Heat

(UPI) -- Mike Miller, who was released from the Miami Heat in July, is considering filing a hefty lawsuit against the team.

Miller's attorney alleges the team is partly responsible for his being conned out of $1.7 million.

Miller, who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, lost the money in a scam allegedly orchestrated by Haider Zafar, a South Beach man who presented himself as a member of a wealthy Pakistani family.

Miller's complaint alleges that a Heat employee introduced him to Zafar, who then used $700,000 of the money to pay down debt on $3 million worth of courtside Heat tickets.

A month later, Zafar asked the Heat's then-executive vice president Stephen Weber to introduce him to players with "businesses Zafar could invest in." The suit alleges that Weber knew of Zafar's shady credentials the whole time.

The Heat is working on a settlement with Miller, but "the parties were far apart" in recent talks, his attorney Andrew Fine said. Miller seeks the entire amount he lost in the scam -- he eventually sent Zafar $2 million in total, but has already been repaid $300,000.

Zafar is currently imprisoned in Ohio awaiting trial for unrelated fraud charges.
