Walmart worker fired after helping assault victim

(UPI) -- An employee at a Michigan Walmart was fired after defending a woman who was being assaulted in the store parking lot early Sunday morning.

Kristopher Oswald, 30, had only been working at Walmart for seven weeks, and thus still in a probationary period, when he intervened in the apparent assault -- and he was fired because of it.

He was spending his lunch break -- at 2:30 a.m. -- in his car when he heard a woman screaming. He got out of his car to see what was going on and saw a man hanging onto the hood of a woman's car.

Oswald says the man attacked him, punching him and yelling "I'm going to kill you!"

He says as soon as he managed to pin down the man, two others jumped him from behind. Fortunately police arrived soon afterward.

But Walmart didn't exactly laud Oswald for helping the woman. The company handed him his termination papers, stating that "after a violation of company policy on his lunch break, it was determined to end his temporary assignment."

"The last thing I expected was to not have a job," Oswald said. "I don't even know what to put on an application about all of this. How do I say this ended?"

One thing he does know -- he'd do it all over again.

"I will always do the right thing," he said.
