Louisville's Chane Benahan suspended indefinitely

University of Louisville basketball player Chane Benahan has been indefinitely suspended.

(UPI) -- Junior forward Chane Benahan has been indefinitely suspended from the Louisville basketball team after violating university policy, said coach Rick Pitino.

Pitino did not specify which policy Benahan violated, but the player will not practice or be included in team-related activities during the suspension.

"He had a number of suspensions last year, so this was not one thing," Pitino said. "It was many different things, and the AD and I just sat down and said he's got to get his head right and his life right before he plays another basketball game."

The suspension “will be a long time,” Pitino said, and Behanan’s sanctions are a culmination of a multiple “little things that when you add them up, they’re pretty big.”

Benahan will not play in November and could return in December, but Pitino said a December return is unlikely.

“Chane Behanan is no longer a part of our basketball team," Pitino said.

“He just has a very difficult time understanding life’s values and the significance of life’s values,” Pitino said. “We’re going to try to help him along. We’re more interested in Chane the man than the basketball player.”

He said that while he will not discuss what Benahan did, it was nothing violent.

He "wouldn't hurt a fly," Pitino said.

“This is a difficult one because the kid is a loveable young man. He’s a loveable guy. He really is,” Pitino said. “But if we don’t do something now, he has no chance to prosper later in life. We’re just using him for his basketball skills.

“This is not about basketball. This is about Chane Behanan becoming the person I think he can become.”
