Alireza M survived a botched hanging at a jail in the northeastern city of Bojnord last week and was found alive in the morgue. He is now recovering in order to be fully healthy for a repeat execution.
"The verdict was the death sentence, and it will be carried out once the man gets well again," an official said.
Alireza M, 37, hung for 12 minutes and was declared dead by a doctor. However, when his family went to collect his body the next day, he was still breathing.
"We found him alive again, which made his two daughters very happy," an unnamed family member said.
He is now being kept under armed guard at a hospital.
"The horrific prospect of this man facing a second hanging, after having gone through the whole ordeal already once, merely underlines the cruelty and inhumanity of the death penalty," said Philip Luther, director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Program. According to Amnesty, at least 508 people may have been executed in Iran this year.
