Dr. Adrian Cruz, the director of a health clinic in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca, was suspended after newspapers obtained a photo of a pregnant woman giving birth on his lawn.
La Razon de Mexico published the story of Irma Lopez, a 29-year-old indigenous woman, who had made the hour-long trek down from the mountains with her husband to visit Cruz's Rural Health Center.
Nurses refused to admit her after determining that she was only eight-months pregnant and not dilated enough.
Unable to turn anywhere else, Lopez delivered her baby on the clinic's front lawn, while her husband begged for help from the clinic. A passerby snapped an image of the incident, which went viral.
"I didn't want to deliver like this. It was so ugly and with so much pain," Lopez said of the experience, according to Sky News.
Clinic staff admitted her once she had delivered -- a healthy baby boy named Salvador -- but some observers saw Lopez's story as symptomatic of many women's lack of access to proper health care.
