Author Tom Clancy has died at age 66.

Popular thriller writer Tom Clancy has died at age 66 according to his family and publisher.

The bestselling author has published 28 books -- military thrillers with political intrigue and high-tech tactics -- including a new novel yet to be released.

Perhaps best known for his novel "The Hunt For Red October," which inspired the movie of the same name, Calncy's writings also inspired the "Rainbow Six," "Ghost Recon" and "Splinter Cell," video game series.

No cause for the author's death has yet been released.
