The vice president's 26-year-old niece was taken into police custody Tuesday after a fight with her roommate and subsequent scuffle with officers.

Sources told the New York Post that Caroline Biden was "screaming at the top of her lungs" and "beating on the doors" of the New York apartment she shares with the roommate who approached her about unpaid rent.

When police officers arrived to mediate the dispute, Biden, the daughter of Joe Biden's brother James, allegedly "got physical", resisted arrest and tried to punch one of them.

Caroline, who works for a New York art dealer, was covered in a white sheet and taken to the hospital after "difficulty breathing."

Authorities charged her with harassment, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
