An Australian student was fatally shot while jogging in Duncan, Okla., on Friday.
Christopher Lane, a 22-year-old from Melbourne, was a college baseball player and overseas student. He died on the road where he was jogging after being shot in the back.
A woman who called 911 told the dispatcher that he fell into a ditch, had blood on his back, turned blue and stopped breathing.
“He was standing in the roadway and he fell over, and as I come by, he just fell over in the ditch,” said the woman, who identifies herself as Joyce Smith. "He's turning blue."
Three teenagers were involved in the shooting -- James Frances Edwards Jr., 15; Chancey Allen Luna, 16; and Michael Dewayne Jones, 17. One of the three told police that they shot Lane because they "were bored."
The shooting has led Australian deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer to call on Australian tourists to boycott the United States.
“It is another example of murder mayhem on Main Street,” Fischer said.
“People thinking of going to the USA for business or tourists trips should think carefully about it given the statistical fact you are 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Australia per capita per million people,” Fischer said.
The teens were reportedly turned in by their next potential target.
Luna and Edwards have been charged as adults with first-degree murder. Both are being held without bond. If convicted, the two could face life in prison.
Jones was charged with accessory for allegedly driving the vehicle carrying the other suspects. His bond was set at $1 million.
