The Bachelorette finale: Desiree takes a turn after Brooks's departure

Desiree Hartsock, this season's "Bachelorette," was in shock when assumed frontrunner Brooks Forester stepped out of the competition.

Forester was one of three suitors remaining, and told her that he was not in love with her. His confession came shortly after Hartsock professed her love to him.

"It broke my heart to have him say those things to me," Hartsock said.

Going into the finale, Hartsock had to decide between the two remaining suitors, Chris Siegfried and Drew Kenney, who are "amazing guys who do want to love me, and who do love me. I just can't love them as much," she said.

She had a change of heart after she came to terms with being blindsided. Hartsock, 27, decided to move on and give the remaining two a chance, starting with a dinner with Kenney.

"I don't know if I see our futures together," she told Kenney. "I never in a million years wanted to hurt you. I just know."

Kenney thanked her for being honest, but said that he had "found the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with."

Then, Hartsock had a final date with her final suitor, Siegfried. Before the date, Hartsock was filmed talking about the date, and being afraid of a similar change of heart.

Once on the date, she was startled with how well it went.

"How could I have not have loved him from the beginning?" she asked. From there, Siegfried asked her father for her hand in marriage.

He then went to propose, when Hartsock stopped him to explain the whole situation -- loving Forester, then Forester leaving her, then her realizing how much she loved Siegfried.

Siegfried then got down on one knee again, and this time, she accepted his proposal.
