Marilyn Monroe, who died 51 years ago Monday, has long been rumored to have had a relationship with John F. Kennedy.

A new book confirms the relationship, and that Monroe herself called first lady Jacqueline Kennedy to talk about it.

Christopher Andersen, author of "These Few Precious Days: The Final Year of Jack with Jackie," wrote that when Jackie first entered the White House she was afraid she would never see her husband.

The days in the White House turned out to be some of the happiest for the couple, however, as they shared both home and office.

Andersen said that Jackie knew about the "other women" in her husband's life, however, but she decided to turn a blind eye as long as he did not embarrass her.

"It's the sort of thing that's unbelievable but really happens in history," said presidential historian Doug Wead. "Some of these things we're uncovering right now will move from speculation to fact as time progresses."

But President Kennedy's relationship with Monroe "seemed to bother [Jackie] the most," Andersen wrote, as she feared with Monroe's public life she could reveal the scandal at any moment and destroy her marriage.

Andersen wrote that Monroe thought that Kennedy would marry her as his career died down, and later told a friend, "Can't you just see me as first lady?"
