LaGuardia crash landing injures 16

Sixteen of the 144 passengers and six crew members aboard Southwest Airlines flight 345 that crashed in LaGuardia Monday were injured in the crash.

Ten of the passengers are currently being treated for minor injuries while the other six are hospitalized.

The flight crew was also taken to the hospital for observation, according to Thomas Bosco, general manager at LaGuardia Airport. In addition one Port Authority officer was treated at the scene for exhaustion.

The incident took place at around 5:45 p.m. when the nose gear on Southwest's Boeing 737 "came to a stop on Runway 4 without its landing gear, though the back wheels did come down," CNN quoted Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown as saying.

Passengers on the Southwest Airlines flight from Nashville, Tenn. evacuated the plane using emergency chutes just after the landing, according to officials.

Though the FAA said the flight "reported possible front landing gear issues before landing," NTSB investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

The airport reopened the runway Tuesday morning.
