Grammy-winning country singer Randy Travis is in critical condition at a Texas hospital, People reported Monday.

The 54-year-old country singer is "suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy," his spokesperson said in a statement.

According to CNN, Travis started feeling unwell on Sunday after several days on the road last month. He was scheduled for another show in Deadwood, S.D., this week.

The Mayo Clinic defines viral cadiomyopathy as a "disease that weakens and enlarges your heart muscle." The disease can't be attributed to any specific cause, but Mayo cites high-blood pressure and long-term alcohol abuse as possible contributing factors.

Travis was arrested for assault, public intoxication and driving while intoxicated in multiple incidents last year. After pleading guilty to drunk driving last summer, he received two years probation and a 180-day suspended jail sentence.
