Jason Kidd made his coaching debut for the Brooklyn Nets and earned his first technical foul as coach in the same game.

Kidd, a former point guard for the Knicks, retired from the NBA on June 3. By June 12, he was named coach. He got the foul Sunday during his coaching debut, leading the team in a summer league game against the Detroit Pistons.

He earned the foul 37 minutes in when he strayed too far away from the coaches' box while contesting a call with an official. Kidd had instructed players to intentionally foul Andre Drummond, but the official did not call a foul.

"So it's a lesson learned, that I know I can't go past half court," Kidd said.

"Hey, I've seen some of these coaches be all the way down on the other end. I can't follow their lead in that aspect. I learned really quickly where the box is."

Kidd has called the summer league a learning experience and expects to pick up much more in the coming months.

"It's all a learning experience," Kidd said. "This is summer school for me. Hopefully, I'm going in the right direction."

The team lost 78-67 in his first-ever game as coach, but Kidd's team is expected to do well, especially after a trade that got the Nets stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Celtics.
