Butler hires Miller as head coach as Stevens steps up to Celtics

Butler University men's basketball announced Saturday that the team has named Brandon Miller as head coach.

Miller has been an assistant coach under outgoing coach Brad Stevens, who is taking the top job with the Boston Celtics. Stevens, 36, has become the youngest coach in the NBA.

Miller is a 2003 Butler alum. As a Bulldog, he played point guard and became one of Butler's all-time leaders in points, three-point field goals and assists. He later returned as assistant coach.

"There is something special about somebody who has been a part of this program for a long time," Butler director of athletics Barry Collier said. "Brandon is incredibly bright and has utmost integrity."

In 2007, Miller helped take the team to a 30-4 record. That season, Butler was ranked in the national top 25 for 20 weeks, reaching as high as No. 8.

He was away from the team for five years, during which he worked under Thad Matta, a fellow Butler alum, at Ohio State.

Last season, Miller worked as a special assistant for the University of Illinois' head coach John Groce. Miller returned to Butler as assistant coach in April.

"I'm not Brad Stevens. I am Brandon Miller," Miller said. "The same goals that we had a week ago are still our goals today."
