Colorado GOP hopeful Jaxine Bubis is taking heat for publishing erotic romance under the name Jaxine Daniels, which may hurt her chances in a fall recall election of Democratic Senate President John Morse.

In a statement to the Denver Post, Bubis only admitted writing "Beantown Heat," an erotic novel published by eXtasy Books in 2004.

"Beantown Heat" and Bubis' pen name, Jaxine Daniels, have been removed from the eXtasy Books website. Her own author website appears to have been taken down, though an archived version exists at the Internet Archive.

"Ten years ago, as a stay-at-home mother who was helping to contribute to support our family, I took creative writing classes," she said in the statement. "One project that resulted from those creative writing classes was a fiction romance novel. The novel had very limited publication (less than 50 copies) and I took it off the market as soon I contractually could, which was around eight years ago."

But according to her author profile at Amazon.com -- under the pen name Jaxine Daniels though it shows photo and video of Bubis -- she has written at least one multi-title series in a addition to multiple single-title stories.

"In my first series, I combined my love for hockey and my experience as an EMT and created a fictional NHL team in Seattle. Next, I had a foray into single-title paranormal romance with a wonderful love story that bridges time and death in New Orleans."

She went on to describe a work centered around U.S. Army pararescue jumpers.

"Then, I found the Air Force PJ's - don't tell the Navy SEALS, but the PJ's are better. They do it all, from jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft to climbing mountains. These are true American heroes (not that the SEALS aren't, mind you.) I put my PJ team just outside Yosemite."

Bubis isn't the only Republican aiming to replace Morse, who faces recall because of his leadership on strict new Colorado gun laws. Bubis contributed to the recall effort, and has the support of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and other conservative groups.

But Colorado Springs gunshop owner Paul Paradis found out about the erotic novels and spread the word. "I was absolutely aghast," he said. "This is a person supported by the Christian right and conservative lawmakers."

Former City Councilman Bernie Herpin, the only other Republican to announce candidacy so far, said he hopes "these revelations won't be a distraction from the real goal of recalling John Morse."
