A dog in Thailand saved the life of an infant after the baby was discarded.

The dog, named Pui, found a white plastic bag in a trash dump in the Tha Rua district of Thailand and took it home to his owners' patio.

Pui put it down and began to bark incessantly until his owner's 12-year-old niece came to see what was the matter.

Inside the bag was a baby girl, still alive. Pui's owner Gumnerd Thongmak and the 12-year old, Sudarat, immediately took the infant to the hospital for care. Doctors at the Tha Rua Hospital said the baby was premature.

She weighed four pounds. The baby has since been transferred to another hospital while village chiefs try to locate her mother.

For his gallant acts, Pui has received a medal and leather collar from the Red Cross chapter of Tha Rua. Thongmak was rewarded by the Miracle of Life foundation with a check for $300.

"It's lucky that Little Pui found the baby. It was a surprise to us, since Little Pui never brought anything home, only barking at strangers when he’s out and about,” said Poomrat Thongmak, Sudarat's mother.

As of this morning, there are five families that have contacted authorities in hopes of adopting the baby. All families happen to be dog owners.

Residents of the area said that Pui regularly roams the neighborhood and is a bit of a community watchdog.
