Tongue patch diet forces users to consume liquids only

A new "miracle" diet in which users have a patch sewn onto their tongues to keep them from consuming any solid foods looks to become a new go-to weight loss program.

The Weight Reduction Patch was launched by Beverly Hills Surgeon Nikolas Chugay in 2009. If used according to instructions, users could allegedly lose up to 30 pounds in one month -- the maximum amount of time dieters are allowed to wear the patch.

Dr. Chugay's website states that if used for longer than a month the patch could become permanently attached to the tongue as the muscle's reconstructive tissue begins to grow back.

The so-called "Miracle Patch" works by making "chewing of solid foods very difficult and painful, limiting the patient to a liquid diet." Dr. Chugay says the patch is an alternative to more drastic and expensive weight loss methods such as gastric bypass or lapband surgery.

Chugay's miracle patch is reportedly applied during a "reversible procedure that lasts less than an hour." The patient is later put on an "easy to follow liquid diet, fulfilling all of their nutritional needs while at the same time minimizing caloric intake and maximizing weight loss results."

Though Chugay claims that he's only practiced the $2,000 procedure in a little over 60 women since 2009, other countries such as Venezuela -- which boasts the largest beauty industry per capita in the world -- have had over 900 women get the patch since 2011 for just $150.
