Chrysler to recall 630,000 SUVs worldwide

Days after U.S. automaker Chrysler said it wouldn't recall about 2.7 million Jeeps that were reportedly defective, Chrysler announced the recall of 630,000 SUVs worldwide.

The automaker claimed that 409,000 of its Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs from 2010 to 2012 will be recalled to fix a sensor-activated restraint system designed to deploy if the vehicle were to overturn. According to Chrysler, the cars' seat belts and side airbags may not function properly during slow-developing rollovers.

More than 254,000 of the vehicles are in the Unites States. No accidents related to the defect have been reported thus far.

In addition, the automaker said it would be recalling 221,000 Jeep Wrangler SUVs from 2012 and 2013 over a power steering component that may rub against a transmission oil cooler line, resulting in premature wear.

This week The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent Chrysler a letter asking the automaker to voluntarily recall Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1993 through 2004 and Jeep Libertys from 2002 through 2007 citing a risk of a fuel-tank fire in rear-end collisions. Chrysler officials said the company "does not intend to recall the vehicles."
