Prince won't discuss marriage equality in rare interview

Minnesota became the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriage on Tuesday, but Prince, a Minneapolis native, avoided questions about the hot-button political issue during a two-hour long interview with his hometown paper, The Star Tribune.

"What he didn’t discuss were some things Minnesotan," the Star Tribune's Jon Bream said of the rare interview. "He dodged questions about the state’s new marriage-equality law."

Prince's feelings about gay marriage sparked controversy in 2008, when the mysterious musician accused the New Yorker of misquoting him on the subject:

"Prince tapped his Bible and said, 'God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out,'" the magazine's Claire Hoffman quoted him as saying when she asked him about social issues like gay marriage and abortion.

"We're very angry he was misquoted," a "Prince Insider" told Perez Hilton at the time.

"What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment," the report said.

As Gawker points out, Prince has displayed more conservative leanings since he became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001.
