Jim Carrey photo sale online to buy guns, eBay pulls ad

Jim Carrey spoofed Charlton Heston, a fervent gun rights advocate and former president of the National Rifle Association, in a gun control video for Funny or Die this week, depicting the late actor as a man who needed guns to compensate for his small anatomy.

In response, an eBay user named astrobuzz posted an autographed photo of Jim Carrey, signed "Spank you very much," and titled the listing "Jim Carrey Autographed 8X10 Photo So I Can Afford a Gun!" According to the Hollywood Reporter, astrobuzz's photograph, which might usually sell for less than $10, was bidding as high as $850.

But by late Wednesday, eBay appeared to have asked the user to remove all mentions of "guns," or his reasons for selling the photo. Astrobuzz added a less specific description to the item:

"I'm trying to sell this 8X10 Autograph reprint photo of Jim Carrey for personal reasons. >;) Happy Bidding! P.S. I have followed all the ebay policy conditions this time and the auction should make it to the end."

But astrobuzz's idea sparked copycat eBay sellers and gun advocates who continued to mock Carrey's political stance. They also mocked him in the items' comments sections:

"This item will likely provide a few years of hilarious entertainment at first, but I'm worried that after a time it will become a pretentious self-righteous trainwreck as it ages and becomes increasingly pathetic," wrote one commenter.

Carrey took to Twitter to denounce "a lot" of the signed photos as fakes, and added a few thoughts of his own.
