Matt Lauer next 'Jeopardy' host?

Alex Trebek will be retiring from "Jeopardy" in 2016, and a source tells the New York Post Matt Lauer is at the top of the list of successors.

Lauer has been making headlines, reported to be on his way out as the host of the "Today" show when his $25-million-a-year contract expires in 2015. Lauer is blamed for the show's ratings drop after 16 years as number one.

Trebek suffered another heart attack last summer and planned to retire sooner, but Sony Pictures Television convinced him to stay another three years while they find his replacement. When his contract expires in 2016, the iconic game show host will be 76.

The Post also reports that Sony is considering Anderson Cooper, who "likes the idea" and whose CNN contract is up next year.

Final decisions on a new "Jeopardy" host are over a year away. “In this business,” one inside source told the Post, “that’s a lifetime.”
