A 20-second YouTube clip that appeared to show a New Jersey police officer assaulting a woman went viral this week, prompting the Elizabeth, N.J., police department to launch an internal investigation, the Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.
The original video, which has since been removed, captured cell phone footage of a 10 to 12 person brawl outside Envy Night Club in Elizabeth over the weekend. It shows an unidentified officer pushing a man to the ground in an attempt to break up the fight, then punching a woman in the face after she grabs his arm.
The attorney general's office didn't comment on the video, but rules regarding acceptable use of police force state that an officer may defend themselves when threatened.
Officials told NBC New York that the cop remains on active duty.
