U.S. officials have reported that the gunman holding a child hostage for a week in an underground Alabama bunker has been killed by law enforcement officials and the child is safe and on his way to a hospital.

At 3:12 p.m., FBI agents safely recovered the child, officials said in a press conference Monday.

Within the past 24 negotiations deteriorated and the hostage taker was observed holding a gun. FBI agents determined the child was in danger, and decided to go in.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, the perpetrator, was killed in the FBI action.
