"Girls" showrunner-star Lena Dunham gave an unexpected shoutout to actor Chad Lowe when she accepted the award for Best TV Comedy or Musical at Sunday night's Golden Globes.

"It took a village to raise this very demented child," Dunham joked, adding, "I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance I would thank Chad Lowe. I promised my mother."

Lowe immediately began trending online, with many social media users wondering why Dunham would have thanked him.

Dunham's backstage explanation was pretty simple:

"Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I'm an a**hole," the 26-year-old said.

Some movie fans might remember that Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for "Boys Don't Cry," forgot to thank her then-husband Chad Lowe during her acceptance speech.

The Lowe-Dunham love-fest continued on Twitter:

Lowe's older brother, Rob, was also pretty proud:

As Alan Sepinwall pointed out, via The Atlantic Wire, Dunham's "thank you" to Lowe has been a while in the making. The two discussed the possibility over Twitter back in August.
