The Onion's favorite vice president was all smiles and jokes at Thursday's mock swearing-in ceremony for new senators. Every inch the avuncular politician, Joe Biden shmoozed and flirted with the new men and women of the Senate, their children and especially their moms. Among other moments, Biden asked Claire McCaskill if she planned to get "a lotta machine guns" to protect her daughters, and he told Sen. Heidi Heitkamp she was about to be frisked. "Spread your legs!" he said. "Need any help on your pecs, lemme know," he told one of Sen. Tim Scott's brothers.

Here's a compilation of Biden's best moments, courtesy of Talking Points Memo:

Only one ceremony attendee managed to steal the spotlight from the chatty vice president. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who replaced retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman, brought his wife and two kids along for the session. Rider, sitting in his father's arms, raised his hand for the oath of office.
