CAIRO, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi will be tried on charges he spied for Hamas and Hezbollah and aided in terrorist acts against Egypt, officials say.
The prosecutor-general's office said Morsi will be among 36 defendants to face allegations of "collaborating with foreign organizations to commit terrorist acts in Egypt," Ahram Online reported Wednesday.
Other charges include revealing defense secrets to foreign countries and funding terrorists and military training "to achieve the purposes of the international organization of the [Muslim] Brotherhood," of which Morsi is a leading member.
The accusations are reportedly connected to Morsi's escape from prison during the 2011 uprising that resulted in the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.
Among others charged are former presidential advisers and prominent members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Morsi is currently on trial for killing opposition protesters during a December 2012 demonstration.
